Özet:

The scholars of the ṣighār al-tābiʿūn played a crucial role in the compilation and transmission of ḥadīths, yet they faced criticism from later muḥaddithūn of the tabaʿ al-tābiʿīn era. Among the primary critiques directed at them were their practices of tadlīs concealing a weak narrator and irsāl narrating without explicitly naming an intermediary. These two terms have often been conflated in early Islamic scholarly discourse. Imām al-Shāfiʿī, for instance, reproached certain ṣighār al-tābiʿūn narrators for their insufficient rigor in transmitting mursal unlinked narrations and for relying on weak transmitters. Within classical ḥadīth methodology, the irsāl and tadlīs of major muḥaddithūn are generally not considered detrimental to the reliability of a narration, provided the transmitter is otherwise trustworthy. However, no uniform methodological approach exists concerning this specific generation of narrators. This study focuses on Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr, a prominent scholar among the ṣighār al-tābiʿūn, who was frequently accused of tadlīs and irsāl. Through an analysis of his narrations, this paper seeks to evaluate the nature of these criticisms and propose new theoretical frameworks for understanding transmission practices during this formative period of ḥadīth literature.
