Özet:

The Surname Law enacted in 1934 is a cultural seal on the identity fabric of Republican Turkey. This law, which is one of the most important steps in the modernisation and national identity formation process of the newly established Republic of Turkey, aims to strengthen personal identity in a national context by giving each individual of the society a surname. The surnames given by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to his close circle in line with this law appear as powerful symbols pointing to the roots and cultural heritage of the Turkish nation. Each name reflects the modern structure and values of the Republic along with its attachment to Turkeys past. In this study, the etymological depths and historical backgrounds of the surnames chosen by Atatürk are examined; the compatibility of each surname with the identities of these personalities and their place in the social memory of the Turkish nation are investigated. The surnames chosen with the Surname Law are considered not only as a sign of identity, but also as an important tool used in shaping Turkeys new identity. Especially the names chosen are loaded with meanings that revitalise Turkish history and carry the traces of the past to the future. Atatürks choices aim to reinforce not only individual identities but also the collective memory of the nation and create a common sense of belonging in society. These naming preferences are considered not only as personal memories but also as cultural tokens inscribed in a common future. Thus, Atatürks surname policies stand out as a step taken to reinforce cultural ties with the Turkic world and to give the Republic of Turkey an identity strengthened by historical heritage.
