Özet:

Humanity uses naming as a tool to distinguish between individuals, things, and geographic locations. Place names, in particular, play a different importance in this context. Humanity desires the names they give places to reflect the place, its culture, and themselves. Place names are regarded in this context as reflecting society. Although the names given to urban placessuch as neighbourhood, avenue, street, square, and boulevardshare many characteristics, they also serve other purposes, including commemoration, remembering, and the formation of a national identity. In other words, these names serve a variety of functions, including forming and reflecting a citys identity. This study aims to investigate Erzincan Citys urban toponymy from this angle. In this context, the names of 57 neighbourhoods, 147 avenues, 3390 streets, 5 squares, and 6 boulevards taken from the Erzincan municipality have been evaluated and categorised using particular criteria. Urban areas listed in Erzincan appear to be frequently named after significant individuals, names associated with the republic, and martyr names, according to this evaluation and categorization. In this way, it can be seen that the namings in Erzincan City correspond to the paradigm of remembering and contribute to the citys identity. The presence of a nationalist-conservative trend in Erzincan citys identity can therefore be seen when the names of Ottoman sultans, individuals from the republican era, religious leaders, and recent political personalities used in naming are taken into account.
