Özet:

Different supply methods are applied to meet energy needs worldwide. Among these, fossil energy sources are predominantly in the lead, while natural energy sources such as water, sun and air are also utilised. Another energy supply method is nuclear power plants. Nuclear power plants, which emerged after the discovery of uranium in the 18th century and the splitting of the atom in the 20th century, began to be widely established especially in continental Europe, the United States and Russia. In Turkey, the first serious attempt on nuclear energy was made with the establishment of the Atomic Energy Commission on 27 August 1956. In 1957, Turkey became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations. Nuclear power trials in Turkey started in 1960 and the construction of a nuclear power plant was initiated. In 1962, a 1 MW research reactor was commissioned in Küçükçekmece, Istanbul. In 1972, the Nuclear Energy Department was opened under the Turkish Electricity Authority. Tenders were launched in 1977, 1983 and 1996 for the establishment of a nuclear power plant. However, for various reasons, these initiatives remained inconclusive. As a result of new initiatives in the 2000s, the Agreement on Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Russian Federation on the Establishment and Operation of a Nuclear Power Plant at the Akkuyu Site in the Republic of Turkey was signed between Turkey and Russia in Ankara on 12 May 2010 for the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, Mersin. Accordingly, four reactors with an installed capacity of 4800 MW will be built in Akkuyu. This study analyses the construction process of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Turkeys first nuclear power plant.
