Özet:

Body and body-oriented perceptions have an important place in the self-concept. On the other hand, visual culture increases the emphasis on the body. Eye becomes the dominant sense in visual culture. Social media creates a radical dynamic about body and beauty concepts; since traditional visual communication tools such as cinema and television are one-way, they can only create pressure by directing perceptions and attitudes; due to its two-way nature, social media oppress the actor towards action. The body ceases to be a mere watched element, but becomes a presented element. Beauty and the body are very important elements of popular culture. However, it is not clear how much of the opress on this issue is due to visual culture and how much is due to the specific effect of social media. In addition, since men and women have different ways of reading texts, they may read and produce social media texts differently. In this context, in this study, the mediating role of the body appreciation in the relationship between social media addiction and self-esteem is examined. As a result of the analysis, a significant relationship was found between social media addiction, body appreciation and self-esteem. While social media addiction negatively predicts body appreciation and self-esteem, bodily appreciation positively predicts self-esteem. However, no mediating role of body appreciation was found in the relationship between social media addiction and self-esteem.
