Özet:

Grotesque, which ironically turns tragedy and humor into images, is a style of decoration that reveals subconscious fears, ridiculous quirks and uncomfortable emotions. Although the first examples of Grotesque in Western art are found in Eastern art, where Greek art is affected, the ante quemof grotesque elements in the TDK dictionary is taken to the Roman period and many studies highlight Roman and post-Christian artworks. Looking at the grotesque studies, it is understood that this style can be taken further back. Examples in Greek art, especially in architecture, became traditional and widespread in the Archaic period in the Gorgon-Medusa style. The first examples of the development of grotesque art in the West, which manifests itself mostly with mythological narratives in architecture, are seen with Pagan art, and then it is seen that it continued in Christian art and started to be used in places with religious functions such as churches. While grotesque elements are terrible on the one hand, they can be funny on the other, and in this respect, they contain a contrast in essence and combine tragedy and comedy at the same time. The Gorgons, which are processed in Greek architecture and mentioned in Greek mythology, constitute a Grotesque theme both in terms of imagination and form. Contradictory concepts and semantic features of grotesque art, the tragic story and function of Medusa in Greek mythology, and its reflection in Gorgon-Medusa and architecture due to the overlap of reflections on artworks constitute the subject of the study. In this study, literature review method was used. The aim of the study is to reveal that the Grotesque elements were processed in Greek art by emphasizing the effects of Eastern art by examining some temple structures in which Gorgons, especially Gorgon-Medusa descriptions, were seen in Archaic Greek architecture.
