Özet:

A legend, which reflects ancient knowledge embedded in cultural memory through mythological codes, is a folk narrative that conveys elements of the collective unconscious to the conscious mind through various symbols. In this context, legends that have formed around Battal Gazi prominently feature symbols such as mountains, caves, cauldrons, and trees. These symbols appear to be in profound harmony with cultural phenomena. In addition to his epic identity, Battal Gazi is also known for his journey of individuation and holds significant historical value as a hero. The images that emerge in the legends shaped within his process of spiritual maturation serve as intermediaries in his attainment of selfhood. Within this framework, the aim of this study is to analyze the symbolic motifs present in the legends surrounding Battal Gazi, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of their meaning. The study examines legends about Battal Gazi found in Fırat Havzası Efsaneleri, Malatya Efsaneleri, and Fıratın Efsaneleri Malatya. The findings suggest that the symbols in these legends function as a form of wisdom that facilitates the transmission of cultural memory into the future. Additionally, these narratives symbolically reflect humanitys relationship with nature, the unknown, and the inner self.
