Özet:

ABSTRACT: Migration, a human phenomenon stemming from the need to relocate due to various reasons, has often been forced upon individuals due to political circumstances. The population exchange between Greece and Turkey following the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne is one such example. While this exchange initially appears as a simple relocation, it also signified a cultural exchange. For those who experienced the exchange, this cultural shift led to the formation of a new identity: the identity of a refugee. At the core of this refugee identity lies the migration experience itself and the narratives that have developed around it. This study, grounded in folklore studies, examines these migration narratives within the framework of cultural memory. The fieldwork for the study was conducted in Muradiye, a neighborhood in Yunusemre district of Manisa. Muradiye is a unique settlement, having been home to various migrant groups. Before the population exchange, it was exclusively a Greek village. After the exchange, Turkish refugees settled in the abandoned homes and lived in isolation until Bulgarian migrants arrived in 1939. This isolation allowed them to preserve their culture and transmit the fundamental element of their refugee identitymigration narrativesto subsequent generations. The study found that even the second and third generations, who did not personally experience the exchange but grew up listening to their elders stories, still carry these narratives in their memories and identify as refugees. This suggests that the younger generations have indirectly experienced the exchange through these narratives, and that these narratives have sustained the refugee identity over time.
