Özet:

Located in the interior of Western Anatolia, the district of Gediz stands out as a significant settlement area in terms of its natural resources, historical continuity, and cultural heritage. Situated in the upper basin of the Gediz River, the region has historically hosted various civilizations due to its fertile alluvial soils, abundant water resources, and mountainous terrain conducive to agriculture and settlement. Moreover, Gediz holds strategic importance today with its rich thermal springs and geothermal energy potential, offering substantial opportunities for both health tourism and renewable energy investments. The district bears the traces of multiple historical layers, including Phrygian, Byzantine, Germiyanid, and Ottoman periods, and has emerged as a noteworthy center of intellectual production. Figures such as Gedizli Azmî and Gedizli Mehmed Efendi, who lived during the Ottoman era, exemplify the deep-rooted tradition of provincial scholarly activity and its complex interactions with the imperial center. Following the devastating earthquake of 1970, the city underwent a comprehensive reconstruction process, resulting in significant spatial and socioeconomic transformations. This study aims to examine Gedizs geographical structure, historical development, post-disaster urban planning, and intellectual legacy through an interdisciplinary lens. In doing so, it seeks to highlight the districts multifaceted importance and position Gediz as a valuable case study for understanding regional identity, resilience, and the role of provincial centers in shaping Ottoman and modern Anatolian thought.
