Özet:

Politeness is one of the requirements of sustainable, qualified communication, and the phenomena shaped around this concept have been discussed in many disciplines, especially sociology and psychology. Linguistics, one of these disciplines, has tried to approach the concept of politeness within the framework of pragmatics. This approach, which examines the purpose and reasons for politeness and the ways of protecting speakers face dignity, has led to the emergence of Politeness Theory and politeness strategies. Politeness theories, which deal with behaviors and attitudes that protect or threaten the face of the speaker and the listener, who are the participants of communication, have been interpreted by different researchers from different perspectives. The process started with linguists such as Grice, Goffman, Lakoff, and Leech and continued with Brown and Levinson. Strategies that protect both the positive and negative face of the speaker and the listener have been developed. The corpus of Haldun Taners texts, such as theatre, novels, and short stories, was selected as a sample in this study. In this corpus, the strategies based on the speaker being respectful, acting sincerely, avoiding imposition, etc., based on the listener empathizing, praising, being aware of the listener, etc. and based on the speaker-listener finding common ground, making an agreement, avoiding conflict, etc. and their uses were focused on.
