Özet:

The aim of this paper is to define and understand how a scandal operates in the new media. Unlike the old days when scandal used to stand for watchdog journalisms critical asset, new media transformed the scandal as well. Scandals now refer to more than transgression of norms on societal level. Because, today scandals rather act as a discourse on journalistic level which bring speed, digital traffic, attention, visibility and interaction. Scandals are obscured in the dust of new media frenzy covering scandal. As new media seeks attention, journalistic practices such as watchdog journalism stays in the background. The digital platforms that transformed the media and journalism and the formation of news seek attention of the user no matter what happens. News are tailored according to platform logic. This paper aims to analyze the scandal as a discourse in the new media by the help of critical discourse analysis. In this paper, news about scandal are analyzed by critical discourse analysis. The data were collected from the website of Hürriyet newspaper, which is one of the mainstream newspapers. Hürriyet was chosen because it represents the mainstream media, and as the news site of Hürriyet has the most traffic when compared to other newspapers websites in the Turkish media. Purposive sampling was chosen as the sample of the study. Purposive sampling is compatible with the purpose of the study. The news in a short-term one-week time period were examined, and ten scandalous news were analyzed during this period. The abundance of scandalous news in a short period of time sheds light on the new medias attitude towards scandal. The study shows that the construction of scandal in new media as a discourse is commercially profitable because it increases digital traffic by acting as a click-bait. In this respect, the new media has reconstructed the scandal as a discourse, and scandals have ceased to be an important element of watchdog journalism and have become an element that increases digital traffic.
