Özet:

Studies on gender theory between the early Republican years and the 1980s are limited. This article aims to fill this gap by analyzing Aile Magazine 1947-1952 to examine the gender politics of the early Republican era. Through a descriptive study based on the magazine, the role of Turkish women during this period is analyzed. The equality rights granted to women in this period were directed more towards building a modern society than individual freedom. Women were defined not as individuals but as the enlightened mothers of the nation. The family was constructed as a central tool for modernization, and womens role was designed as the female bird who would create a modern home. Despite having public rights, women were given a limited role in private life. During this period, womens public visibility was shaped by the desires of male elites, and women emerged as figures who built the modern family. The magazine reinforced societal gender norms such as the ideology of motherhood, the beauty myth, and the concept of womans nature. Additionally, with the shift of Westernization towards America, the magazine referenced the American lifestyle, portraying the Turkish woman as a figure who was Western but more specifically American. The gender perceptions of the Republican reformers and the American public of the time were reflected in the magazine. This article offers significant insights into the fact that without questioning historical processes and the patriarchal structure of the state, the social problems of women cannot be solved. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to new scientific studies aimed at understanding the connection between state feminism and archetypal patriarchal relationships.
