Özet:

The study aims to determine the relationship between trust in social institutions and fear of crime. Trust is one of the major elements that constitute social capital, along with social networks and norms. In communities affluent in social capital, where mutual trust is high, it is expected that fear of crime, which means the fear of being a victim of a crime, will be low. In this context, the study has two research questions. The first one is, Fear of crime for different types of crimes is related to the lack of trust in which social institutions? The second one is; To what extent does the lack of trust in social institutions overlap with the trust data obtained from the World Values Survey WVS?. The studys data sources consist of 41122 posts on Twitter X using crime-related keywords and the survey data on trust in social elements from the World Values Survey WVS, which was conducted 6 times in Turkey between 1990-2018. According to the findings obtained from the content analysis, the relationship between individuals distrust of social elements and fear of crime was confirmed. In parallel with this, it was determined that there is a parallelism between the results of the level of trust in social institutions in the World Values Survey and the results obtained in this research. As a result, while a lack of trust in social institutions is associated with low levels of social capital, this situation shows that it is also related to distrust in social institutions as a cause of fear of crime.
