Özet:

Objective: Social media and internet addiction are associated with an increased risk of eating disorders, obesity, anxiety, and increased interest in weight loss. This study aimed to investigate the eating behaviors of Nutrition and Dietetics students during social media use and evaluate the association between students social media addiction and their awareness of eating habits. Materials and Method: The sample of the descriptive cross-sectional study consists of 148 students studying in the Nutrition and Dietetics department in the 2020-2021 academic year. Information form, the Social Media Addiction Scale, and Mindful Eating Questionnaire were used to collect data. Results: The mean age of the participants was 22.36 3.5 years, and 84.5 had a normal body weight. There was no significant relationship between the participants body mass indexes and the Social Media Addiction Scale and Mindful Eating Questionnaire. While the majority of the participants had the characteristics of the Mindful Eating Questionnaire sub-dimension, more than half of them were determined to be less dependent according to the results of the Social Media Addiction Scale. While 67.6 of the participants stated that the time they spent on social media did not affect their sleep patterns, 62.8 reported that they reduced their physical activity levels. While half of the participants stated that they did not experience any change in the number of main and snack meals and portion sizes while using social media, the other half stated that the idea of consuming snacks more frequently and ordering food from outside emerged. Conclusion: Social media and internet use can have a significant impact on dietary habits and physical activity levels. It is thought that it is important to increase young adults awareness of social media addiction, healthy eating behaviors, and the importance of physical activity.
