Özet:

Primary school is an important institution where students acquire basic skills, learn critical skills such as reading and writing, and are prepared for life and higher education. Every parent wants their child to experience this process in the most advanced schools under the guidance of expert teachers. This demand puts parents on a quest and forces them to choose schools and teachers. The process of school and teacher selection continues for months with teacher investigation and school search. The aim of this study is to determine the expectations of first grade parents regarding the school and teacher their children will receive education. In the study, phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The study group was determined by criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The criteria for determining the sample in the study were having a child at the first grade level, making a school-teacher preference while enrolling in the first grade, and volunteering to participate in the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parents. A total of 17 parents from 5 primary schools in Malatya and Şanlıurfa provinces were interviewed. The interview results were evaluated by content analysis and the results were presented in tables. As a result of the research, the parents stated that the structural soundness and security status of the school were effective in the selection of the school and stated their suggestions regarding the enrollment process of first grade students.
