Abstract Kars, which still has the identity of a frontier city, was one of the most important places in terms of Ottoman Eastern border security. When Sultan Alparslan overtook Ani and Kars in 1064, Kars became a border city for the Turks and maintained the same function in the following periods. Assuming the duty of serving as a defence line in the wars fought in the East during the Ottoman rule, Kars naturally became the target of neighbouring states. The fact that the territory of Kars extended to important cities such as Yerevan and Tbilisi and the presence of some diplomatic problems caused Suleiman the Magnificent to take notice of this place and to reinforce the castle. As a neighbour of the Erzurum Province where the artillery and cannon casting activities, which were very important for the Ottoman defence, were carried out, Kars always served as a barrier and gradually turned into a military base. During the eastern campaigns, the Ottoman Empire shifted castle fortification activities especially to Kars and its surroundings and, as for castle defence, took into consideration the need for grain products as well as for soldiers and ammunition. Especially during the eighteenth century, the flow of grains and ammunition to the Castle of Kars was never interrupted. Due to Irans activities in the first half of the eighteenth century and Russias advances in the late eighteenth century, the Ottoman Empire tried to ensure the fortification of Kars Castle and the transport of ammunition to the castle both through the Batum-Ardahan route via the ports of Istanbul-Trabzon and through the Erzurum route. In this time period, the need for artillery and ammunition increased even more throughout the Ottoman Empire, as well as in the North of the Black Sea and in Eastern Anatolia, which Russia was targeting. One of the priorities of the Ottoman Empire in Eastern Anatolia was Kars Castle.
