Özet:

When reading a book or article, the small numbers that are at the end of the text or the bottom of the page often catch the eye. These numbers refer to footnotes, which play a crucial role in academic studies by providing information about the sources referenced or offering additional details that help readers gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Footnotes have a long-standing tradition in scientific texts, where they are commonly used for verifying information and providing references. However, their use in literary texts is often neglected. In critical and literary studies, footnotes serve various functions due to their referential and marginal characteristics. In scientific writing, footnotes enhance the text by supporting and defining its claims, thereby aiding readers in assessing the texts reliability and accuracy. Contrary, in fictional works, footnotes can enrich the fictional universe and bolster the textual authority, allowing the author to draw the reader more deeply into the narrative and extend the boundaries of the fictional reality. This article will explore the history, types, and functions of footnotes in literary texts. It will examine examples of footnote usage, particularly in Turkish literature, to discuss the role footnotes play in literary works. The evaluation will focus on how footnotes contribute to the readers understanding and interpretation of the text, highlighting the power they add to the literary experience.
