Özet:

In the 19th century, the development of printing techniques enabled illustrated magazines operating in the field of publishing to become visually richer and reach a wider audience. Visual images produced with the engraving technique reflected the social and cultural life of the period and contained important observations about the Eastern and Ottoman geography in particular. Frank Leslies Popular Monthly LPM, an American illustration magazine, featured many wood engravings from the Ottoman period under various topics in its 2nd issue. The monthly included engravings reflecting the historical, social, cultural, and religious life of Istanbul under the heading Turkish Cities, Manners and Customs. In this study, six prints from LPM titled: The Sultan of Turkey, A Turkish Sick Room, The Tower at Galata, Women at a Fountain, Howling Dervishes at the Tomb of a Sheikh, and The Interior of the Summer Saloon of the Sultans Harem are discussed. The wood engravings that come to life on the pages of the magazine offer an aesthetic richness with their subtle details and depth, reflecting the artistic understanding of the period, increasing the visual power of LPM and providing a unique experience to its readers. It was also observed that the wood engravings were re-presented either directly or with minor retouching from previously produced images. The repetition of Orientalist images manifested itself through engravings and played a significant role in shaping the Western perception of Turks.
