Özet:

This article is on a stone basin which is on display The Naval Museum in Mersin Inv.No. AA0271 . The stone basin which was previously at the collection at Istanbul Naval Museum was brought to the Mersin Naval Museum in 2013. It is largely acceptable that the Turkish word of “çeşme”, meaning “fountain”, was derived from the Persian word “çeşm” which means “eye”. To refer to the wells, fountains and springs as “çeşm” where the water comes up, resulted in naming these small structures as “çeşme” where the water flows in. In Ottoman hydraulic architecture, the fountains were constructed either as a component of a building complex or as an architectural element of its own in Anatolia. They appear in many forms such as wall fountains, corner fountains, public square fountains, fountains that are designed as part of sabils public fountain kiosks , fountains that are located in the open-air prayer places namazgâh , chamber fountains, column fountains and salsabils ornamental cascade fountains . In the architecture of Turkish Anatolia the main scheme of the fountains which represent variations forms in terms of their construction materials, design and style over the centuries. Many consisted of a reservoir where the water was stored, a spout slab, in which the faucet was fitted. The faucets appear in two types; one provides the continuous flow of water and the other which the water could be turned off and on. The fountains usually have an inscription either bearing the name of the founder or religious scripts as well as date the fountain. The function of the basin was to collect the water. The characteristics of the fountains varied according to the architectural developments over the centuries and the personal taste of the founder and/or artisan. The fountains which were adorned with western decorative elements represent a significant architectural type within the history of Ottoman architecture. The fountains at the public squares, quarters or halting places of Ottoman settlements have recently been the subject of significant research. Within context of this article, stylistic characteristics, decoration, design and function the stone basin will be handled, as well as its comparison to parallel examples.

Mersin Deniz Müzesi’nde sergilenen taş tekne Env.No.
