Özet:

The central subject of migration studies in Turkey has mostly been migrants, while the psychological and sociological reactions of the host community to migrants have been treated as factors of secondary importance. Migration researchers, acting on the negative consequences of the theories of nationalism and racism, have adopted a simplistic approach and evaluated the opposition of the host community to immigrants in the context of racism or nationalism. However, this explanation is far from sociological, as it ignores the intricate relationships between migrants and the host community native population that have emerged in different cities and have a different content. This article is an empirical research that aims to reveal the variables that determine the attitudes of the host community towards Syrian migrants in Gaziantep and Afyonkarahisar, two cities with different social and demographic characteristics and different native populationSyrian migrant ratios. Therefore, the main factors determining the attitudes of the host community towards migrants are the traditional social and economic structure and culture of the city, the ratio of the migrant population to the host community , the socio-demographic characteristics of the migrant population i.e. their occupations in their countries of origin, their education, whether they are urban or rural, and the level of interaction between migrants and the host community. In addition, the study revealed that a negative narrative about Syrians, which has become more prominent in recent years, has started to dominate across Turkey, and that this negative narrative is produced in different ways in different cities. The difference between cities is due to factors such as their traditional socio-economic and cultural structures, the characteristics of migrants and their ratio to host community. Attitudes towards migrants differ from city to city due to factors such as the traditional socioeconomic and cultural structures of cities, the characteristics of migrants and their ratio to the host community.
