Özet:

The Companions, who formed the first generation of Islam, played a pivotal role as intermediaries in learning, understanding, practicing, and transmitting the Qurʾān, the Sunnah, and the religious commandments and prohibitions they received from the Prophet. Recognizing and introducing the Companions is thus of great significance. Consequently, numerous studies have been dedicated to various Companions. This research aims to contribute to this scholarly field by examining the life and contributions of ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī d. 58678, a prominent figure among the Ahl al-Ṣuffa and a governor of Egypt, who played a pioneering role in serving Islam and advancing the science of ḥadīth. The limited number of studies on ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir and the intention to address certain aspects previously overlooked have motivated this investigation. Utilizing early ṭabaqāt, historical, biographical tarājim, and ḥadīth sources, this study strives to provide a comprehensive understanding of his life and contributions. Although detailed information about him is scarce in these sources, they offer sufficient material for an in-depth examination. The study explores both his life prior to embracing Islam and his activities afterward, with a focus on his experiences during the emerge of Islam, the period of the first Caliphs Khulafāʾ Rāshidūn, and the early years of the Umayyad state. Notably, Ibn Ḥazm d. 4561064 in his works Jawāmiʿ al-Sīrah wa Khams Rasāʾil Ukhrā and Asmāʾ al-Ṣaḥāba wa Mā Li-Kulli Wāḥid Minhum Min al-ʿAdad cites that ʿUqba transmitted 55 ḥadīths. This number was cross-referenced with other key sources such as Aḥmad b. Ḥanbals d. 241855 al-Musnad, al-Rūyānīs d. 307919-920 al-Musnad, al-Ṭabarānīs d. 360971 al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, and Ibn Qutlūbughās d. 8791474 Musnad ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir. It was found that the actual number of his ḥadīths varies across these sources, often exceeding the number mentioned by Ibn Ḥazm, even without repetition. Thus, this study argues that a more precise and scholarly approach would be to specify the number of ḥadīths attributed to ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir in each individual source, rather than presenting a singular, definitive figure.
