Özet:

Innovations are the sole source of growth and development for a region or country in the long run. This study aims to analyze innovation barriers faced by manufacturing firms operating in the Province of Mersin. An innovation survey was conducted with 76 manufacturing firms in the Province of Mersin that employed 20 or more workers and filled the required capacity report. The sample of the firms is determined based on the Industry Database of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey TOBB. The results indicate that economic risks, access to finance, tax administration, contraction in national and local markets, excessive energy costs, tax rates, and lack of qualified personnel are the main innovation barriers ranked from the most to the least significant, respectively. In addition, cross relations revealed statistically significant relationships between innovation and firms legal status, industry, senior managers education, and experience levels, and the number of RD personnel. Also, a significant relationship has been observed between a firms innovation activities and the use of grant support as well as RD expenditure, even in the case where the innovation is new for the firm but not new for the main market.
