Özet:

Ahde Vefâ and Nakz-i Ahd were the principles to which the Ottoman State was the most sensitive at her relationships with other states. This sensitivity came from the Quranic Verses and Traditionals of Prophet Mohammed emphasizing the importance of Ahde Vefâ and Nakz-i Ahd. Another reason underlying the sensitivity of Ahde Vefâ of the Ottoman State was the principle “promise is honour” at her custom. As from her foundation, the Ottoman State didn’t compromise on these two principals at her relationships with other states. In this way, while she was attaining reliability of faithfulness to her promise in the eyes of her friends and enemies, she looked for characteristic of Ahde Vefâ from the states asking for her friendship. The Ottoman State didn’t differentiate addressee of her promise. How much faithful she was to her promise given to the Muslim states so much faithful she was to her promise given to the Christian States. While the Ottoman State was taking care of keeping her promise at maximum degree, she regarded dishonouring addressee’s word as cause of war. On the one hand, as the principle of Ahde Vefâ practised by the Ottoman State sensitively throughout centuries was becoming one of the most important principles of our culture of politics on the other hand, it has taken its place in the style of Pacta Sunt Servanda in the contemporary international diplomacy.

Osmanlı Devleti kendisi Nakz-i Ahdde bulunmamaya azamî derecede ihtimam gösterirken muhatablarının Nakz-i Ahdde bulunmalarını da savaş sebebi saymıştır. Osmanlı Devleti’nin yüzyıllar boyunca hassasiyetle uyguladığı Ahde Vefâ ilkesi bir taraftan siyaset kültürümüzün önemli düsturlarından biri haline gelirken diğer taraftan modern uluslararası diplomasi de pacta sunt servanda şeklinde yerini almıştır.
