Özet:

Türkiye adopted a policy based on democratic values after the Second World War and gradually took measures to ensure a fairer, more secure, and trustworthy electoral environment between 1946 and 1950. As a result of these efforts, the first general parliamentary election in Türkiye, in which the principles of a single-stage and majority vote electoral system, secret ballot, open counting, and judicial oversight were implemented simultaneously, was held on May 14, 1950. On the road to the 1950 general parliamentary election, which holds significant importance in Turkish democratic history, Yeni İstanbul newspaper, which began its publication on December 1, 1949, with the motto political, economic, and independent daily newspaper, covered the adoption of the new election law, electioneering, and the execution of the general parliamentary election from a unique perspective with a strict journalistic approach and stood out with its impartial news and commentaries, unafraid of criticism. Yeni İstanbul particularly brought issues such as election security, reconciliation among political parties, and the importance of party election manifestos to the agenda, prioritized coverage of the activities of Republican Peoples Party CHP and Democrat Party DP, criticized the uncompromising stance of Nation Party MP, and introduced unique practices such as political survey and analyses of the election campaign from the perspective of foreign journalists. In this article, with the aim of understanding how a new and distinct newspaper striving to establish itself in the press perceived and evaluated the 1950 parliamentary election process, Yeni İstanbuls perspective on the 1950 parliamentary election process has been examined based on news articles and commentaries published in the aforementioned newspaper between December 1, 1949, and June 3, 1950 and has been aimed to draw conclusions about the political climate of the period.
