Özet:

This study aims to contribute to the field of translator studies by examining the construction of translator identity and telos of Orhan Burian, one of the prolific intellectuals and translators of the early Republican period, in his autobiographical narratives. The research corpus consists of Burians diaries, letters, and the biographical texts written about him by contemporary intellectuals after his death. The analysis is conducted within the light of the five-stage methodological model adapted to Translation Studies by Kaindl 2024, based on Smith and Watsons framework for autobiographical narrative analysis. The findings indicate that Burians translator identity is shaped around three main axes: his intellectual network and background, his critiques of the translation policies of the time, and his approach to the profession of translation. The study reveals that Burian emerges not merely as a translator engaged in linguistic transfer, but as a multifaceted intellectual figure who bridges artistic production and academic discourse. Positioning translation not as an individual act but as an integral part of institutional responsibility and cultural development, Burian advocates for the visibility of Turkeys own cultural heritage alongside the transmission of Western classics. Approaching translation within the framework of ethical, aesthetic, and social responsibilities, and being one of the leading Shakespeare translators of his time, Burian contributed to the development of Turkish theatre through his collaboration with Muhsin Ertuğrul and regarded translation as a creative act that, in tandem with cultural change, introduced new genres and narrative forms into Turkish literature.
