Özet:

The first ahdname establishing the relations between the Ottoman State and England was granted by Sultan Murad III r. 1574-1595 to England in 1580. The privileges of the English in well-protected domains were maintained and expanded utilizing ahdnames that were renewed with additions. The scope of these accords varied with each renewal. However, determining these discrepancies requires initially identifying the dates and numbers of the ahdnames, followed by a comparison of the actual texts. There is conflicting evidence within scholarship on Ottoman-English diplomatic ties regarding the dates of the issuing and renewal of the ahdnames as well as their numbers. This study determines the dates of the granting of ahdnames by the Ottoman State to England and the number of these documents. In this way, this article hopes to contribute to the research of Ottoman diplomatic history.
