Özet:

There are lingering doubts about the lyricists of certain songs in Turkish classical music. The lyrics of some compositions are either misattributed to others or are marked as anonymous, often indicated with a question mark ?. Upon examining the major sources of classical Turkish music, namely dīwāns, mathnawīs, mejmūʿas, and tadhkiras, it becomes apparent that some poetic texts from classical Turkish literature have been adapted as song lyrics. In many cases, these poems are set to music and performed, sometimes with minor modifications. One such instance involves a quatrain by Yahyā Bey of Tashlidja d. 990158283, an underappreciated poet of the sixteenth century, who may be characterized as Ill-starred, echoing a phrase used in the song under discussion. There are different views regarding the authorship of the lyrics for the song I am an ill-starred, strange, wanderer lover, composed by Hācī ʿĀrif Bey in agir-aksak tempo and nihavend mode. The name of Mehmed Saʿdī Bey is most often cited as the lyricist. This study begins by exploring perspectives from the field of classical Turkish music regarding the authorship of this song. Subsequently, based on notable textual similarities, the lyrics are compared with a quatrain by Yahyā Bey, leading to the argument that the true lyricist is Yahyā Bey himself. The article then discusses the textual alteration made to the original quatrain and how the lyrics came to be associated with Mehmed Saʿdī Bey. Finally, by consulting Yahyā Beys dīwān, the study identifies the differences between the quatrain and the song lyrics, offering insights into the historical evolution of the text.
