Özet:

A wide range of literature has emerged in Turkish written and oral culture environments regarding the hoopoe recorded in the story of Prophet Solomon and the Queen of Sheba in the Quran. A motif frequently used in written culture, the hoopoe has become the subject of Turkish legends, tales and folk stories. Various beliefs have emerged over time regarding the hoopoe, also known as ibibik and çavuşkuşu in Turkish. The text on the use of the hoopoe in folk medicine practices, which is the subject of this article, is recorded in a conk in the Turkish Manuscripts Collection of the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA Library, numbered LSC.0896. According to the text we have, it is possible to categorize the suggestions regarding the use of the hoopoe in folk medicine into two groups as religious-magical and medical applications. The folk medicine suggestions reported in the text in question must have been compiled and arranged from various medical treatises and books. Examples of religious-magical and medical practices related to the hoopoe contain important information about folkloric attitudes based on belief as well as various healing and preventive functions in the context of Turkish folk medicine.
