Özet:

This study examines the historical origins, development, and socio-religious functions of the Mawlid al-Nabī celebrations that emerged in the Andalusian region during the 7th13th centuries. The main objective of the research is to determine the role of these celebrationsinitiated under the leadership of Aḥmad al-ʿAzafī of Ceuta and his son Abūl-Qāsim al-ʿAzafī in preserving religious identity and fostering social solidarity in the region. The study evaluates how such religious celebrations functioned as instruments of identity preservation during a period marked by political and cultural disintegration in al-Andalus. It aims to demonstrate that the Andalusian Mawlid celebrations were not mere imitations of their Eastern Islamic counterparts but rather developed as a response to the unique socio-political conditions of al-Andalus. Specifically, the research is framed around the idea that, in a time when Christian pressure was intensifying and Muslim identity was under threat, Mawlid celebrations came to serve as tools of cultural resistance. The scope of the study centers on the Mawlid celebrations initiated by the ʿAzafī family and is grounded in their seminal work al-Durr al-munaẓẓam. Accordingly, the focus of this research is limited to the Mawlid celebrations that emerged in al-Andalus and the pivotal role played by the ʿAzafī family in their formation.
