Özet:

This study examines the political ideas of Rashid Reza who follows the Afgani-Abduh line in modern Islamic political thought. The aim of the article is to examine how Rashid Reza founded his idea of reform and renewal in the context of the future of the Islamic world in the conflict of the tradition and modernity and the reflections of this idea on todays Islamic political thought. As a matter of fact, modern Islamic political thought has progressed more along the political spectrum of Afgani and Abduh, and no comprehensive anaysis has been made regarding Rashid Reza. This article aims to fill this gapin the literature. In this context, according to Reza, the backwardness of Muslim East in the face of the West and its colonization by imperial Powers due to the Muslims becoming obsessed bidahs unwarrant innovation in religion and supersititions and breaking away from Islamic truths and values. According to Reza, this defeat of Islamic geography against the West is not due to the fact that Islam prevent progress. On the contrary, Muslims are moving away from Islamic truhts and norms. While the Muslim geography is writhing in ignorence, powerty, corruption and autocracy, West has made tremendous strides and proved its superiority in military, economic, political and cultural fields. Therefore, progress can be achieved neither by strict adherence to traditions, as claimed by classical ulama nor by imitating the West in every sense by completely abandoning Islamic rules, as claimed by modernists. A middle way is possible and Islam, itself -Quran and Sunnah- contains the Dynamics that will ensure the progress. According to Reza, Islam does not oppose the norms and values introduced modern world constitution, parliament, limited government, human rights and democracy- but rather offers a system that promotes these norms along the axis of the concepts of shura and meshveret. While the achievements of the West in the field of science and technology should be taken an example, Muslims should also preserve their local identity and values within the consciousness of ummah. In this respect, Reza points out a sharp distinction between modernization and westernization. From this point of view, Rezas theory of caliphate operates from the point of reconciliation of the Quran-Sunnah and modern requirements and institutions; contemporary norms and Islamic values. This article was handled with document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods and an interpretive approach.
