Özet:

Rhetoric, which was considered as the identity of the Arab society and which effectively used the power and influence of expressions, has had a remarkable place in society since the past. The poets, who were favored by the community during the festivals, where poets and orators were competed before Islam, were occasionally perceived as individuals with extraordinary powers. Furthermore, the Qur'an addressed the society, to which it descended, with rhetoric-laden expressions that were later embedded in the codes of that society and rendered them incapacitated. Thus, rhetoric, specific to a certain society, navigated to a novel phase due to the universal dimension of the Qur'an and the widespread admittance to Islam. During this phase, rhetoric was represented through laconic connotations. The interest of the Islamic societies towards the Qur'an resulted with a tendency towards the Qur'an based sciences. Rhetoric received certain share from such courtesy and was adopted as a research domain by several prominent Islamic scholars. During this phase, rhetoric adopted a written and normative structure, departing from the oral structure. Subsequently, for a long period, rhetoric comprised literary forms such as commentaries, annotations and abstracts in compiled works. Such focus of rhetoric did not raise much criticism in early periods and in the middle ages. However the block, defined as the west, created a new balance of power in the world, namely modernism, through economic strength, economic domination of other societies and through socio-cultural influences on other societies, thus, the scientific and cultural background of these societies started to receive both national and international criticism. During this period, most Muslims, especially those in Egypt, focused on finding solutions to such situation. Two main methods emerged from the endeavor to find a solution, where, first approach focused on embracing the cultural and scientific background since neglecting such values would result in underdevelopment and the second approach was based on revising and elevating the cultural and scientific background. During the process, rhetoric received certain share from these ongoing debates. The criticism towards rhetoric included the aspects of dullness, being limited to substantial and complex subjects that are specific to those with a certain scientific background, becoming stagnant due to the effect of sciences such as philosophy, theology and logic, and it was also criticized for failing to adopt a holistic approach towards literary phenomena of the modern period, since it only focused on atomic sentence forms. Given the scope above, Ahmed eş-Şâyib, who lived in Egypt, where such debates were experienced fervently, compiled the work “el-Üslûb” (The Style) with the aim to address such and similar considerations and to create a novel approach in the disciplinary domain of rhetoric. The present study takes the abovementioned discussions into consideration and examines the elevation movement in rhetoric through Ahmed eş-Şâyib’s perspective.
