Özet:

Nowadays, landfill upgrading and sustainable waste management strategies are of great importance for the protection of the environment and public health. In this study, the current status of solid waste landfills in Hakkari Centre and Yüksekova, their environmental impacts and rehabilitation process were examined in detail. Wild landfills may cause water, soil and air pollution due to uncontrolled accumulation of wastes and lead to negative impacts on the ecosystem. Within the scope of the rehabilitation of wild landfills in Hakkari and Yüksekova, covering of wastes with suitable materials, collection of leachate, installation of gas monitoring chimneys, grass laying and greening works were carried out. Particularly, leachate management and control of gas emissions are critical for protecting groundwater and improving air quality. Rehabilitation of wild landfills should be considered as a part of sustainable waste management policies and the continuity of such studies should be ensured. According to the results of the study, the rehabilitated areas could be used for green areas, recreation areas or renewable energy projects. In addition, technical and financial difficulties experienced during the rehabilitation process were also discussed and suggestions were presented for more effective implementation of similar projects in the future. This study is an important guide not only for Hakkari and Yüksekova, but also for other regions with similar problems.
