Özet:

Traveling is the first action that comes to mind to satisfy the desire to wonder, explore and learn. Since the geographical disvoveries, geographies with different cultures and resourcas have become a desire to see and discover for the West. This desire later forms the Orientalist discourses of the West. The widespread travel to Eastern geographies with the development of transportation facilities, technology and industry paves the way for the West to travel and experience the East more. With this, works of travel literature such as fictional and real travelogues, science-fiction novels, journeys between planets, voyages of discovery, travel notes published in periodicals, and many other works of travel literature gradually increase in 19th century Western and Turkish literature. These are the points where both reading and traveling affect ones recognition of new worlds, imagination and literary life. In 19th century Turkish literature, Ahmet İhsan, the founder of the journal Servet-i Fünun, was an important writer, publisher and traveler. This article focuses on Ahmet İhsans interest in travel and his Nile River voyage, a research area for Orientalism. In this six-week trip in 1896, Ahmet İhsans expectations, curiosities, feelings, observations and impressions of both ancient Egypt and the modernizing Egypt of the 19th century are examined through the eyes of a Western Turkish traveler. Since the 18th century, Egypt has been a source of curiosity and interest especially for Europeans and has gradually become a field of study and research.
