Özet:

Translation is not merely the re-expression of a text in another language; it is a complex activity influenced by many factors. Numerous studies have emerged to understand and define this complex nature of translation. In this context, Gideon Tourys Target-Oriented Theory is important as it offers an approach that examines translation through norms in the light of the target language and culture. The theorist developed a method that allows for the analysis of the translated text based on its proximity to the source and target cultures, within the framework of acceptability and adequacy, through various norms. Although Tourys method presents a two-poled approach, his approach about a translation can be both acceptable and adequate opens a new dimension within this dichotomy. Based on Tourys view, this study discusses the idea that instead of choosing one of the two poles, the translator may create a bicultural text that reflects the norms of both the source and target cultures by establishing a balance between them. Accordingly, a comparative analysis was conducted between randomly sampled texts from the source stories and their corresponding target texts, with the findings evaluated through the lens of the Target-Oriented Approach. Furthermore, it was aimed to trace the translators decisions, reveal the norms adopted in the translation, and obtain guiding data for future studies. For this purpose, the Turkish translation of ar-Raʿd by Zakariyya Tamer, one of the significant figures in modern Arabic literature, translated by Halim Öznurhan, was selected for examination. The analysis demonstrated that the translator did not choose a single pole, but instead produced translations that were both adequate and acceptable by effectively incorporating elements from both languages and cultures.
