Özet:

Cyprus is of geo-strategic importance. After being under Turkish sovereignty for 307 years from 1571 to 1878, the island began to face difficulties for the Turkish Cypriots following its leasing to England in 1878. The primary aim became the annexation of the island to Greece Enosis. In order to sustain their existence, the Turkish Cypriots organised themselves. Türkiye first viewed Cyprus as an internal issue for England and started to support the Turkish community on the island from 1955 onwards. Starting in 1958, in response to the Greeks Enosis idea, the Turkish community on the island and Türkiye adopted the Partition Taksim thesis. England sought to share its guarantorship over Cyprus with Greece and Turkey; as a result of a joint decision by the USA, Turkey, and Greece, the Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960. However, this joint state effectively ended in 1963. The Greeks increased violent incidents on the island, prompting Türkiye to send two warplanes to the island in 1963 as a warning, which somewhat calmed the situation but did not stop. Indeed, Turkey conducted two Peace Operations in 1974; the island was divided into two regions, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus TRNC was established on November 15, 1983. Despite attempts and negotiations between 1983 and 2003, no solution was reached. Meanwhile, a change in government occurred in Turkey with the 2002 elections, leading to a shift in previous policies regarding Cyprus. The UNs Annan Plan was presented for a referendum in both parts of the island in 2004; prior to the vote, Rauf Denktaş, who devoted his life to the Cyprus cause, was marginalised and rendered passive in Türkiye and Cyprus. The aim of this study is to explore the history of the Cyprus issue, to identify the points Denktaş emphasised while discussing the issue in Aydın press, and to reveal the demands and attitudes of the parties involved in negotiations from primary sources, as well as how the issue was addressed in the national and local press of Aydın. Denktaş visited Aydın several times, but none of these visits had as much impact as his visit in 2005. During this visit, Denktaş focused on Turkish nationalism and Atatürk, the recognition of the TRNC, why he was labelled as an intransigent man as well as on Close Maraş region and the Annan Plan, aiming to raise public awareness by recounting events. He was welcomed with great interest and affection in Aydın, which was also reflected in the press.
