Özet:

In studies on spatial experiences and perception, the sense of vision often takes precedence, while auditory perception and environmental sounds tend to be overlooked. Existing literature predominantly examines the role of sound in spatial perception from a theoretical perspective and mainly for individuals without disabilities. Field studies generally focus on soundscapes, acoustic ecology, and noise analyses. However, research addressing the significance of sound for visually impaired individuals remains limited and is mostly considered within the framework of architectural design criteria. The semantic impact of sound within a space becomes particularly significant when visual impairment is concerned. In Turkey, visually impaired individuals constitute 9.53 of the total disabled population and actively use urbanpublic spaces. This highlights the necessity of investigating the influence of sound on public space perception from the perspective of visually impaired individuals. Addressing this gap in the literature underscores the importance of examining the role of sound in spatial perception and utilization. This study aims to explore the impact of sound on visually impaired users. To achieve this, the concepts of disability and visual impairment are first defined, followed by the establishment of a theoretical framework on the influence of sound in urbanpublic spaces. The study further discusses the effects of sound on visually impaired individuals and introduces assistive technologies supporting these discussions.
